Is a 75 Inch TV Too Big for Your HDB Living Room?

You've seen them on sale at every electronics store: massive 75-inch TVs at prices that were unthinkable a few years ago. In the showroom, they look incredible. But standing in your 4-room HDB living room, a question creeps in — will it completely dominate the space?

It's one of the most common dilemmas for Singapore homeowners upgrading their TV. You want bigger. Everyone wants bigger. But there's a real fear of buying a screen that overwhelms the room, sits too close to the sofa, and turns your living room into a wall of black glass.

Here's an honest look at the numbers — and an alternative most TV shoppers never consider.

75 Inch TV Dimensions: What It Actually Looks Like in Your Room

A 75-inch TV measures roughly 166cm wide and 96cm tall — that's over 1.6 metres of screen, before you add the stand or wall mount.

Now compare that to a typical HDB living room wall:

  • 3-room flat: feature wall usually around 3.2m wide
  • 4-room flat: around 3.6m to 4m
  • 5-room flat: around 4m to 4.5m

A 75-inch TV takes up nearly half the wall in many 3-room and 4-room layouts. Even switched off, it's the single most dominant object in the room — a permanent black rectangle that defines the space whether you're watching it or not.

Ideal Viewing Distance for a 75 Inch TV

The general rule for 4K TVs: sit at a distance of about 1.2 to 1.5 times the screen size. For a 75-inch TV, that means roughly 2.3m to 2.9m from screen to sofa.

Here's where it gets tricky. In many HDB living rooms, the sofa-to-wall distance is between 2.5m and 3m — technically within range, but at the near end. Sit any closer and you'll notice:

  • Turning your head to follow action across the screen
  • More visible pixels and picture noise, especially on non-4K content
  • Eye fatigue during long viewing sessions

So the honest answer to "is 75 inches too big for HDB?" is: it's right at the limit. It can work — but for many layouts, it's a tight fit both physically and visually.

75 Inch TV Prices in Singapore (2026)

Price-wise, 75-inch TVs in Singapore currently fall into three broad bands:

  • Budget brands: roughly $1,000–$1,500
  • Mid-range models: roughly $1,500–$2,500
  • Premium (OLED, Mini-LED): $3,000 and well beyond

That's a serious investment for a screen that may sit at the edge of what your room can comfortably handle.

The Alternative Nobody Mentions: Size Isn't the Problem — Permanence Is

Here's the thing most TV shoppers never realise: the issue was never that 75 inches is "too big." Bigger really is better for movies, football and gaming. The real problem is that a giant TV is permanently big — a fixed slab of glass that dominates your living room 24/7, even when it's off.

A projector flips that equation. A modern smart projector gives you a 100-inch or even 120-inch picture — far beyond any TV that fits an HDB wall — but the screen simply disappears when you're not watching. Your wall goes back to being a wall. Your living room stays a living room.

And today's projectors aren't the dim, complicated machines of the past. Modern smart projectors stream Netflix, YouTube and local apps directly, need no cabling drama, and set themselves up with auto focus and keystone correction. Some, like the Eva Vela 360, even rotate to project on your ceiling — try doing that with a 75-inch TV.

For less than the price of many mid-range 75-inch TVs, you can get a picture 30 to 45 inches bigger — that appears only when you want it. Browse our full projector range to see what's possible.

See the Difference Yourself Before You Decide

Numbers on a page only go so far. The only way to really answer "how big is too big for my room?" is to see both options in a real living room — not a giant showroom floor where everything looks smaller than it will at home.

That's exactly what our showroom is built for. At INNOVATIVE (Sim Lim Square, #05-55), we've set up projectors in a real HDB-style living room, bedroom and office — lights on, lights off, so you can judge honestly how a 100-inch picture feels compared to a 75-inch TV before spending a cent.

Explore our home cinema projectors, or WhatsApp us to ask anything — no pressure, just honest advice from people who've helped Singaporean homes go big since 2006.

The Bottom Line

A 75-inch TV isn't too big for every HDB living room — but it's close to the limit for many, and it's a permanent commitment of wall space. If what you actually want is a bigger picture, not a bigger piece of furniture, a projector gives you more screen with none of the permanence.
